THE ARTIST

Born in 1984. In June 2017, Mago Nagasaka visited Agbogbloshie, a slum in Ghana, where he met people making a living by burning electronic waste from developed countries. Motivated to help, he began creating art from waste materials, using the proceeds to establish recycling facilities and promote sustainable businesses, including agriculture and electric vehicles.

Mago advocates for “sustainable capitalism,” a model that connects Economy, Culture, and Environment in a positive cycle.

In September 2022, he held his first solo museum exhibition at the Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo and won the 51st Best Dressed Award in the academic and cultural category. He also established MAGO MOTORS LTD in Ghana, employing 62 local workers (as of September 2024).

In Agbogbloshie, the largest e-waste graveyard, "burner boys" risk their lives burning discarded electronics to retrieve sellable wires and materials—many not living beyond their 20s or 30s.

Donations offer temporary relief, but Mago’s vision is rooted in sustainability.
To create a future where art and action empower communities to reclaim both their lives and environment.

By 2030, Mago envisions establishing recycling facilities to employ over 10,000 people. To date, his efforts have already repurposed 500kg of waste into art, but his mission has only just begun.

In Agbogbloshie, one of the world’s largest e-waste graveyards located in Accra, Ghana, “burner boys” make a living by burning discarded electronics to retrieve sellable wires and materials. Despite their efforts, their earnings average just 500 yen a day.

Exposed to toxic fumes during this process, many lose their lives in their 20s or 30s. With a volume of e-waste equivalent to 40 Tokyo Domes, Agbogbloshie starkly highlights the hidden cost of global consumption.

Exploring MAGO’s Artworks PART 1 - Moon Series
Following the Paris attacks in 2015, the Moon series was created to reflect a universal longing for peace, inspired by the stillness of the full moon that night.

Created on Echizen washi paper with intricate layers of ink, gold and silver mud, and crystals, each piece invites the viewer into a serene world. The butterflies symbolize the "Butterfly Effect," embodying Mago’s belief that small acts of kindness can ripple into global change.
Exploring MAGO’s Artworks PART 2 - Superstars Project
Through the Superstars Project, Mago teaches art to aspiring young creators in Ghana, selling their works internationally.

10% of the proceeds go directly to the artists, offering them financial independence while fostering their creative talents and voices.
Exploring MAGO’s Artworks PART 3 - MAGO Mint Vol.1
In August 2022, MAGO launched his NFT project, MAGO Mint. Waste St. in NYC is the first series of MAGO Mint, inspired by his observations of the streets in New York City, when he saw furniture and electronics, with many appearing almost brand new, being discarded and disappearing within days. He took it as an opportunity to create a unique NFT project.

MAGO directly painted on these discarded items, transforming them into temporary artworks, making the whole city into a gallery. By digitizing the painted objects into NFTs, he sought to preserve their final moments of energy and potential before they disappeared.
Exploring MAGO’s Artworks PART 3 - MAGO Mint Vol. 2
SLUM STARS is the second series of MAGO’s NFT project. Unlike the first series, SLUM STARS features pixel art created by children and young adults living in Agbogbloshie using donated iPads.

The artworks were turned into free mint NFTs, where the initial NFTs were distributed for free, and 50% of the secondary market royalties were returned to the creators.

The upcoming MEMBER PASS release, part of "ON" CHAIN ART Vol. 2, will also serve as MAGO Mint Vol. 3.

As MAGO’s largest and most ambitious NFT project yet, this release will blend art with cutting-edge technology. Stay tuned for the debut of MAGO’s first online museum.
Building Sustainability Beyond Art
Mago’s efforts extend beyond art. To date, he has delivered over 1,000 gas masks to Ghana, helping protect the workers exposed to hazardous conditions.

In 2018, he established "MAGO ART AND STUDY," the first school in the slums providing education for children. Additionally, MAGO FARM was established to cultivate crops like coffee and moringa, creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities. With a bold goal to employ over 10,000 workers by 2030, MAGO is building a foundation of hope and opportunity for future generations.

In just two years, MAGO cleared the whole beach, using advanced carbonizing technology to compress the textiles to 1/200 of their original size. The result was MAGO BLOCK, a groundbreaking building material made with 60% recycled carbon from the apparel waste. To date, this initiative has transformed more than 1.4 tons of discarded clothing into sustainable construction materials.
